Smart Card Alliance Smart Card Talk
August 2004 • Volume 9 Number 8

Executive Director's Letter

Dear members and friends of the Alliance,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer as much as I am. If you are anything like me, the last few weeks in August is the time I try to get in all of those trips and summer projects that I thought I had all summer to get done, but never got to.  Before you know it, the big yellow bus will be pulling up in the neighborhood again and another school year will begin.

The Alliance office has been busy this summer getting new programs launched and other projects delivered. If you have been away, there have been some announcements you might have missed and a great deal to get caught up with. Starting with projects completed, the July 22 SmartTalk webinar and teleconference on Contactless Payments: Opportunities for Retail and Consumer Benefits was a big success. We had 118 people pre-registered, including a great number of interested media and analysts. The 1 hour and 15 minute session included a lively question and answer period with our distinguished panel of speakers. The complete audio program and presentation are available on the members-only web site for those who missed the event. Shortly we will announce how non-members can access the playback of the full event as well.

What are Lockheed Martin's main business profile and company offerings?

Lockheed Martin Corporation, an advanced technology company, was formed in March 1995 with the merger of two of the world's premier technology companies, Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin employs about 130,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services.

As a lead systems integrator and information technology company, nearly 80% of Lockheed Martin's business is with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. federal government agencies. In fact, Lockheed Martin is the largest provider of IT services, systems integration, and training to the U.S. Government. The remaining portion of Lockheed Martin's business is comprised of international government and some commercial sales of our products, services and platforms.

The Corporation reported 2003 sales of $31.8 billion, a backlog of more than $75 billion and free cash flow of $1.8 billion.
