Médiametrie Selects Gemalto’s SIM-Based Solution for Audience Monitoring

Helping TV channels editor and mobile network operators offer a relevant and targeted service to improve the user experience of anywhere, anytime television

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Feb 17, 2009–Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, today announced the selection of its SIM-based solution for Mobile TV audience monitoring by Médiametrie, the French audience measurement company. The solution offers a handset-independent approach to audience measurement, in which the SIM becomes a user feedback mechanism measuring the success of certain programs or channels, identifying mobile TV “prime times” and helping actors within the mobile TV chain maximize advertising revenues. This application complies with European directives for user privacy.

The on-board application in the SIM enables the collection of audience indicators of the whole user population, or the dynamic segmentation to get specific data on specific programs, such as how the youth market reacts to a new channel, for example. Gemalto is the only company to offer a SIM-based solution which removes the complexity of integrating the client software into the terminal.

“We are particularly interested in Gemalto’s SIM-based solution as it makes it easy to export detailed audience data files for further processing by our analysis tools, said Ivan Dulguerian, Manager for technological marketing and services at Médiamétrie, adding “using the SIM makes sense as it is present in all Mobile TV devices and feeds back data into the server.”

The solution works with a dedicated application stored in the SIM which captures user viewing behavior related to time of day, location and channel. The application feeds the data back to the server which aggregates it and provides a report on the viewing statistics.

“It is a great opportunity for us to cooperate with Médiamétrie–the expert of audience measurement. Feeding up the data into Médiametrie’s audience analysis means that the SIM becomes a virtual agent in the hands of each mobile TV user, offering up data to help improve their experience of anytime, anywhere television,” comments Michel Canitrot, Senior Vice President, Gemalto UpTeq Innovations.

This solution was designed according to the OMA BCAST SCP standard and is an extension of Gemalto’s OMA-BCAST-compliant SCP USIM.
