ActivCard Digital Signature and Smart Card-Based ID Deployment Receives ‘Card Technology Breakthrough Award’ for Integration
FREMONT, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/–ActivCard Corp. (Nasdaq: ACTI), a global provider of strong authentication and trusted digital identity solutions for secure remote access, single sign-on and enterprise access cards, today announced that it has been honored by Card Technology magazine as a winner in the “Card Technology Breakthrough Awards 2004” in the category of “Integration.” The award recognizes the Spanish Ministry of Public Works,’ Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (CICCP), implementation of the ActivCard multi-application smart card-based authentication and digital signature software solution.
CICCP sought to provide its member engineers with an efficient and secure electronic signature solution to expedite the plan review and approval process for public works projects throughout the 52 provinces of Spain. In keeping with its mission of ensuring safe and secure transportation, communications, energy and port construction, the organization chose ActivCard and ipsCA, an ActivCard partner, to secure the foundation of their smart card-based ID card and business process improvement project. The 20,000 CICCP engineers were issued a photo ID smart card in the form of a membership badge that consolidates their identity credentials and stores their individual digital certificate private keys.
“This Award clearly shows that ActivCard’s solutions enable global organizations to meet the demands of industry-initiatives which are driving the adoption of paperless business processes,” said Frank Bishop, ActivCard senior vice president of marketing and sales. “The CICCP deployment illustrates the power of smart card-based solutions to electronically sign documents and forms with the combined benefits of mobility, reduced cost and security.”
The CICCP Electronic Signature Project was originally jointly developed by CICCP and ipsCA. Interfacing transparently with ActivCard client software, the smart card middleware installed on the desktop, ipsCA has developed a digital signature plug-in, U-Sign PDF, based on certificate technology from Microsoft® 2000 CA, for Adobe® Acrobat® software.
Chartered by the Spanish Ministry of Public Works, the Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales, y Puertos (CICCP) is the official civil engineering organization of certified engineers working throughout Spain. With over 20,000 affiliated engineers, CICCP members are responsible for planning, designing, reviewing building, and approving the public works plans and specifications for Spain’s public infrastructure. Using this (ActivCard and IpsCA) technology the CICCP engineers have achieved savings exceeding 6M in few months.
ipsCA provides digital signature products and services to enable secure and trusted transactions. ipsCA has developed a digital signature plugin based in certificate technology for ActivCard Technology and Adobe® Acrobat® software. The plugin extends Adobe Acrobat digital signature capabilities, making electronic documents legally valid. With this feature, users can send confidential business documents such as competitive bids or employee forms across an enterprise or over the Internet with an electronic credential that ensures the identity of the sender and the integrity of the document.
