Gemalto Adds Strong Identity Protection Support to Microsoft Windows Server 2008

MICROSOFT “HEROES HAPPEN HERE” LAUNCH EVENT, Los Angeles, February 27, 2008–Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, and Microsoft are demonstrating the only .NET smart card technology with support built into Microsoft Windows Server 2008. Gemalto also announced its immediate support for Windows Server 2008 with its Strong Authentication Server and family of two-factor security devices.

These solutions strengthen Windows Server 2008 security for enterprises. They help protect digital identities, secure data and applications, and address the security risks of user names and static passwords.

“Microsoft is pleased to be working with Gemalto to expand the offerings for customers of Windows Server 2008,” said Ward Ralston, group technical product manager for Windows Server Marketing at Microsoft Corp. “Our industry partners play an essential role in ensuring that our customers have the best technology foundation available, and the .NET smart card helps deliver valuable new functionality to our joint customers.”

A smart card closely ties PKI certificates to individuals and provides a second factor of authentication in a convenient form that its owner can take and use anywhere. Smart cards also enhance policy driven security, a key strategy for companies combating IT security threats and conveniently meeting regulatory requirements. Smart cards can, for example, enable enterprises to grant individuals more levels of access when the card is present than when it is not.

Another feature is the built-in support of Gemalto .NET smart cards to the Windows platform. This integration allows the cards to work seamlessly with Microsoft’s Terminal Services, Active Directory Domain Services, Active Directory Federation Services, Active Directory Certificate Services, smart card login and the powerful new virtualization features, while eliminating the need for middleware integration.

“One of the most exciting aspects of Windows Server 2008 is the way virtualization will work, and how Gemalto can play a vital role to strengthen its security,” said Marvin Tansley, director of network and identity systems alliances for Gemalto. “Virtualization will significantly increase the number of internal and Web applications requiring secure access. Gemalto helps ensure that the convenience of single logons to multiple applications is not misused or compromised.”

Gemalto’s security devices available for immediate use with Windows Server 2008 range from one-time password (OTP) tokens to its latest innovation, the Smart Enterprise Guardian (SEG). The SEG is a joint development with Lexar that provides up to two GB of smart card protected data storage and Gemalto .NET for strong authentication and digital signature all in one USB device.
