Gemalto launches mobile eBanking solution to protect Japanese from “Ore-Ore” fraud

Amsterdam, February 19, 2015 — Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, has launched Ezio Mobile Out-of-Band Server, a strong mobile solution, to protect people from “Ore-Ore” (“it’s me, it’s me”) scams in Japan. “Ore-Ore” is a notorious crime in which swindlers extort money from their victims using a variety of social engineering and fraudulent schemes, for example, by posing as a relative in trouble. According to the National Police Agency in Japan1, 2014 recorded about 11,000 such cases, with total losses amounting to a whopping 280 million euros. Gemalto will also provide consulting services and support to setup the system. Ezio Mobile Out-of-Band Server will be available end of March.

Ezio Mobile Out-of-Band Server leverages the Ezio Mobile SDK to send secure push notification and authorization requests to a third-party such as a relative of the account holder. This allows the authorized person to notice suspicious activities on the account immediately and take corrective actions, if required. For example, when an elderly person makes an ATM withdrawal, a message can be sent to his son’s mobile for verification. The son can check the details on his phone, and then approve the transaction.

Ezio Mobile Out-of-Band Server is a complete server offering2 and OATH notification app that can be used to prevent frauds across a variety of transaction types and channels, including ATM withdrawals, eBanking, mBanking, telephone banking and NFC payment.

“As Ore Ore reaches problematic levels in Japan, Ezio Mobile Out-of-Band Server provides financial institutions with a simple, easy-to-deploy, and powerful tool for strong authentication,”said Michael Au, President South Asia and Japan at Gemalto. “Our broader range of eBanking portfolio, with a combination of software and hardware solutions, will further enable our customers to mix and match products and services to meet the diverse needs of their customers.”
