Gemalto, NXP and Infineon Demonstrate World’s First MIFARE Compatible SIM-Based Solution for Mobile NFC Services

Unlimited range of contactless services now available to consumers on their mobile phone

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 16, 2009–Gemalto, NXP and Infineon today announced they are demonstrating the first mobile contactless solution compliant with the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) standard and compatible with MIFARE™* infrastructures. NXP’s MIFARE contactless technology is widely deployed for transport networks and access management worldwide. Being compatible with MIFARE, in addition to all the ISO 14443 contactless infrastructures, the solution will enable users to benefit from any contactless service on his/her mobile phone. For example, users will be able to travel across various cities, pay in shops, access their company premises and benefit from loyalty programs by simply tapping their mobile phone.

Gemalto will be demonstrating this universal mobile contactless solution at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week (Hall 8, 8A102). The handset is embedding an NFC controller from NXP and complemented by Gemalto’s secure SWP SIM card incorporating an Infineon flash microcontroller compatible with MIFARE Classic technology.

Commented Jérôme Sion, director of mobile contactless activities at Gemalto: “The numerous projects we have carried out across the world showed great consumer appetite for mobile NFC because of its simplicity of usage and wide range of potential services. This world’s first opens up a realm of new exciting possibilities and demonstrates Gemalto’s commitment to fulfilling consumers’ expectations for more and more compelling services and increased convenience.”

“As co-inventor of NFC, NXP is working with key industry partners to shape the NFC eco-system and enable the development of ticketing and payment applications on NFC enabled handsets,” said Chris Feige, senior director and general manager NFC, NXP Semiconductors. “With more than one billion cards in circulation today, MIFARE platforms are the most widely deployed contactless technology. The availability of MIFARE-compatible applications on mobile phones further strengthens the attractiveness of the NFC technology.”

“With Infineon’s security microcontroller, mobile phones will offer NFC functionality that is secure, convenient and efficient,” said Dr. Helmut Gassel, Division President, Chip Card and Security at Infineon Technologies. “Our secure chip provides the security level required to welcome both transport and payment applications.”
