Hutchison 3G Selects SchlumbergerSema USIM Smart Card Solution

LONDON, (BUSINESS WIRE), Aug. 20, 2002–SchlumbergerSema, a business unit of Schlumberger Limited (NYSE:SLB), today announced that it has signed a contract with Hutchison 3G UK Limited (Hutchison 3G) to supply USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) smart cards and provide training and support.

The contract calls for SchlumbergerSema to deliver its Usimera(a) cards to Hutchison 3G UK, as well as Hutchison Whampoa’s other 3G operations around the world.

Since SchlumbergerSema Usimera cards are designed to provide the highest levels of security for transactions, while optimizing memory capacity, they enable the secure deployment of data services and applications. In addition to providing enhanced authentication to the network, special measures have been incorporated into the Usimera cards to deliver improved security.

“We believe SchlumbergerSema is the world’s leading provider of smart card solutions,” said Colin Tucker, managing director, Hutchison 3G. “Successful completion of their 3G trials, combined with their global production and training support capabilities, made them a sound choice. It was important for us to select a USIM partner that has the experience and expertise to deliver all our requirements, on time and to budget.”

“USIMs are the most sophisticated smart cards ever supplied to the wireless communications industry, and a major catalyst for the development of secure 3G services,” said Xavier Chanay, vice president, Mobile Cards, SchlumbergerSema. “Our USIM cards are the culmination of many years of development effort, and we are pleased to be working with Hutchison 3G at the forefront of multimedia communications.”

In May 2002, Hutchison 3G awarded SchlumbergerSema a separate contract to provide consulting and project management expertise for the deployment of Hutchison 3G’s security platform.
