Hypercom Terminals Star in MasterCard Promotion at Major League Baseball All-Star Game FanFest

80,000 Fans Tap for Prizes With Optimum T4100s and Smart Cards in Baseball Giveaway Event

PHOENIX, July 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/–Hypercom Corporation (NYSE: HYC) took center field in a MasterCard International “FanFest Scorecard” promotion at the Major League Baseball John Hancock All-Star Game FanFest in Detroit. An estimated 80,000 attendees at the five-day event relied on Hypercom Optimum™ T4100 multi-application terminals with VIVOpay 3000 contactless readers to read contactless MasterCard promotional smart cards encoded with thousands of prizes, display the results on the T4100’s graphic screen, and print receipts enabling winners to claim their rewards.

Hypercom’s participation spotlighted the capabilities of the new Optimum T4100, a high-speed credit/debit card terminal that prints a market-leading 18 lines per second, offers dual Internet and dial connectivity, and incorporates a 32-bit Intel(R) XScale(R) processor capable of supporting multiple applications such as loyalty and payment card processing simultaneously without degrading performance.

MasterCard’s use of a contactless prize card drew attention to the MasterCard(R) PayPass™ program, an initiative that eliminates the need for consumers to swipe their credit cards through a reader. Cardholders simply tap their MasterCard PayPass card on a specially equipped merchant terminal that reads consumer account information from a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag embedded in the card.

At the Major League Baseball John Hancock All-Star Game FanFest event, the Hypercom Optimum T4100 terminals were placed strategically throughout the COBO Conference/Exhibition Center and attached to ViVOtech ViVOpay 3000 contactless (RF) readers through a serial cable. The ViVOtech countertop unit enabled the T4100 to read the PayPass card. Hypercom also offers payment terminals with built-in contactless capabilities.

“The fact that MasterCard selected our payment terminals for their promotions at consecutive Major League Baseball All-Star Games testifies to their confidence in the reliability of our products,” said O.B. Rawls IV, president, Hypercom North America. “This is a strong endorsement for Hypercom and an excellent opportunity to strengthen our relationship with one of the leading payment brands in the world.”

“Our participation in the 2005 Major League Baseball John Hancock All-Star Game FanFest is an important part of our ongoing campaign to increase brand loyalty, and Hypercom facilitated that effort by providing the terminals that help drive our contest,” said Arthur Kranzley, executive vice president, Advanced Payment Solutions, MasterCard International. “This year in particular, Hypercom’s ability to support our contactless technology is helping us increase exposure for our PayPass program. Being able to demonstrate the system to 80,000 people in five days is a productive marketing effort by any measure.”

MasterCard’s FanFest Prize Card promotion was one of dozens of attractions slated for the John Hancock All-Star FanFest, which also included state-of-the-art interactive games, clinics, free autograph sessions, baseball memorabilia and other baseball-themed activities.

MasterCard is an official sponsor of Major League Baseball and has been the preferred card of Major League Baseball since 1997. MasterCard is also a sponsor of MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball.
