Increasing Demand for SmartCore™ Establishes Identive in High-growth Contactless Smart Card Market

New design wins and orders signal market acceptance of breakthrough technology

Santa Ana, Calif. and Ismaning, Germany, February 20, 2013–Identive Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: INVE; Frankfurt: INV), a provider of solutions and services for the identification, security and RFID industries, today announced that it is scheduling shipment of 9.5 million SmartCore™ card cores to address over 25 design wins with contactless smart card manufacturers worldwide, new customer orders and partner demand. The combined shipments are valued at nearly $2.5 million and include a significant order for 8 million card cores to be delivered in the second quarter of 2013, which will be used to manufacture multi-function door key and payment cards for the consumer travel and leisure industry.

“SmartCore leverages Identive’s proprietary antenna and inlay designs, expertise in smart card technology, and manufacturing techniques invented by our team and honed over many years,” stated Ayman S. Ashour, CEO of Identive. “We launched SmartCore just over a year ago to address the growing market for contactless smart card production, which is projected to grow 25% year over year in 2013 alone. The momentum we are now seeing with SmartCore demonstrates widespread market acceptance of this breakthrough technology.”

Identive’s SmartCore card cores serve as the heart of contactless smart cards, which are used for numerous ID applications such as building access, payment, transportation and event ticketing. SmartCore’s patent-pending manufacturing process yields exceptionally thin, flat card cores in which the radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna are fully encapsulated in protective material. Contactless smart cards made using this innovative technology have no bumps around the implanted chip and an exceptionally smooth surface that facilitates high-definition image printing and consumer branding. Manufacturers who wish to produce consumer application-oriented cards that are thinner than the standard 760µm can achieve results as low as 440µm with SmartCore and less expensive overlay material can be used when manufacturing standard thickness cards. For many card makers, SmartCore requires a lower lamination temperature for manufacture, which results in reduced energy costs and more environmentally friendly operations.

“SmartCore card cores enable manufacturers to produce higher quality smart cards, more efficiently and using less energy than alternate technologies. Cards built on SmartCore cores also achieve high operating performance and durability in terms of ISO bending cycles and non-delamination for long-term use,” said Dr. Manfred Mueller, executive vice president and COO Identification Products for Identive. “To ensure an easy path for customers to achieve these benefits, SmartCore supports all major IC platforms and ID card manufacturers can utilize existing processes and machinery as they migrate their production from older card technologies to SmartCore.”
