KPN to Operate MVNO in Spain Leveraging Gemalto Managed Services

Dutch operator deploys Gemalto solution to facilitate access to Value-Added Services and boost Spanish MVNO business

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 12, 2008–Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, today announces that Dutch operator KPN has selected its ready-to-use managed services to support Spanish MVNO in enhancing their subscribers’ mobile experience.

Gemalto’s solution includes handset and service Over-The-Air management. KPN began its operations in Spain end of January with the launch of the Simyo brand. Additional mobile service brands are expected to follow suit in the coming months.

“I am very satisfied with this agreement because our mobile phone users will be able to enjoy safely all the services that Simyo offers and with the guarantee of a world leader in digital security such as Gemalto”, says Miguel Angel Suarez, KPN Spain COO.

The Gemalto “off-the-shelf” managed services make it simple for MVNOs to deliver compelling offerings to their subscribers, as they require no customization nor complex set up. Handset management enables automatic configuration of the phone’s settings so that subscribers can easily enjoy value-added services. Device management makes new services immediately accessible as soon as users change handsets. In addition, their ease of use will significantly reduce customer support related costs. The Gemalto solution also allows MVNOs to remotely manage their services with great flexibility, i.e. update their menus or push marketing campaigns.

“Gemalto was able to put forward the advanced outsourcing solution MVNOs need for differentiation, cost control and accelerated time-to-market,” said Miguel Angel Suarez, KPN Spain COO. “It will assist our new Spanish MVNO in launching our brands with reduced investment costs.”

“We are proud to take part in the booming of the MVNOs market in Spain through this contract with KPN,” added Philippe Vallée, executive vice president Telecommunications at Gemalto. “Having worked with a very large number of leading MVNOs worldwide, we have gained an in-depth understanding of their specific needs, in terms of taylor-made user interface on the mobile device screen and specific service promotion towards the very distinctive market segment they target.”
