Trintech and IBM to Deploy Secure, Chip-Enabled PINPad Infrastructure to Ireland’s Post Office Network Nationally
Trintech Group Plc (Nasdaq: TTPA; Neuer Markt: TTP), a leading provider of secure payment solutions, today announced that An Post, Ireland’s Post Office Authority, has deployed Trintech’s secure, chip-enabled PINPad infrastructure nationally. The new technology enables An Post to offer AIB Bank customers the facility to carry out banking transactions throughout its network of over 1,000 automated post offices, compared with 280 AIB branches nationally. Trintech was selected by An Post earlier this year to supply PINPads and all supporting security key management software and services for all counter positions in Ireland’s automated post offices. IBM Global Services provided valuable account management and professional services to assist in the integration of the new system.
The new PINPad technology allows An Post to securely encrypt a cardholder’s PIN and integrates with the post office branch counter automation system. The smart card enabled PINPad will allow the future acceptance of smart card transactions compatible with the global EMV standard endorsed by the major card associations.
“We selected the Trintech-IBM bid based on their track record at delivering proven high security PINPad solutions and their ability to meet An Post’s specific key management requirements,” said Enda Kelly, An Post’s Head of Business Banking. “We are very pleased with the successful roll-out, which was completed ahead of schedule and has allowed the launch of a popular new service throughout An Post’s automated branch network.”
The project was awarded in July 2002 and required a fast roll-out commencing in September 2002. In addition to the PINPads, An Post licensed Trintech’s secure key management software, PayWare PINPad Manager, and a software development toolkit (PayWare SDK) to allow An Post to add additional applications for the PINPads.
“We are now getting the good news of this service out to our customers,” said Dermot Ennis, AIB Bank’s, Programme Manager. “The project also represents a major deployment of Chip & PIN infrastructure and is a step toward preparation for EMV smart card migration in Ireland”.
“We are delighted that An Post selected the Trintech Compact 950-PP PINPad for use in its branches following a competitive public procurement tendering process”, said John Harte, General Manager of Trintech’s POS Division. “The PINPad matched An Post’s requirements for a compact device that fitted the countertop and had the necessary EMV and high security certifications. This new technology enables An Post to deliver secure, future-proofed banking services to AIB Bank, thereby providing significantly superior customer services.”
Trintech teamed with IBM Global Services to provide a range of account and project management services to An Post as part of the rollout. “IBM chose to partner with Trintech to deliver a comprehensive solution to An Post,” said John Herron, Principal, IBM Global Service’s Public Sector. “We combined IBM’s professional services with Trintech technology to win and successfully execute this important project.”
About Compact 950 PINPad
The Compact 950, part of Trintech’s PayWare suite of products, allows a cardholder to securely enter a PIN number for verification of their identity as part of a payment or banking transaction. A high level of security is required to protect the data entered and transmitted from the device. Security features include physical and electronic tamper protection features, and sophisticated software security and encryption techniques. The device has been certified by T-Systems in Germany, the premier independent certification body for high security PIN Encryption Devices (PED). The Compact 950 is also certified by EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) for the acceptance of smart cards.
Trintech has deployed over 120,000 PINPads in European markets. In a response to the encryption and software application demands of the EMV smart card specifications, Trintech introduced the latest model of the Compact 950-PP series this year.
