CoreStreet Announces the CoreStreet FIPS-201 Solution

Provides Government Agencies with NIST Special Publication 800-116 Functionality

Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 1, 2009 – CoreStreet, the leader in credential validation solutions, today announced the availability of the CoreStreet FIPS-201 Suite of products to upgrade existing Physical Access Control Systems (PACS) to full Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) compliance with all functionality as defined in Special Publication 800-116.

Special Publication 800-116, as published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in November 2008, covers recommendations for the use of Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentials in PACS. The publication notes most Federal buildings use proprietary PACS architectures causing a lack of interoperability, as well as challenges in the areas of scalability, security, validity and efficiency.

The CoreStreet FIPS-201 Suite of products permits government agencies to upgrade their PACS system to allow for the verification of PIV cards, Common Access Cards (CACs), First Responder Authentication Credential (FRAC) cards and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) cards without requiring the replacement of the existing system. The Solution verifies these cards at “Controlled,” “Limited” and “Exclusion” assurance levels as defined in SP 800-116, supporting all the required authentication mechanisms and checking the card’s revocation status.

“The CoreStreet FIPS-201 Suite provides government agencies the critical capability to fulfill the promise of converged physical and logical security as envisioned by HSPD-12,” said Eric Ogren, founder and principal analyst of the Ogren Group. “As an effective upgrade to legacy PACS systems, this solution allows government employees and contractors to use their FIPS 201 credential for secure access to federal buildings.”

The CoreStreet FIPS-201 Suite consists of the following components:

  • CoreStreet FIPS-201 F5 System: Adds PIV, CAC, FRAC and TWIC credential compatibility to an existing PACS
  • CoreStreet FIPS-201 Device Developer Bundle and CoreStreet FIPS-201 Head-end Developer Bundle: Software developer kits allowing OEM vendors to build SP 800-116 compliance into their products.

“With the addition of the CoreStreet FIPS-201 Suite of products, CoreStreet now has the ability to demonstrate and implement integrated FIPS 201-enabled end-to-end solutions for physical and logical access control,” said Todd Freyman, Vice President and General Manager of Physical Access Products, CoreStreet. “This solution enables the interoperability of FIPS 201-compliant smart cards across multiple Public Key Infrastructures using a federated (bridged) architecture for cross-certification to validate visitors from other agencies and corporations.”

Available Now

The CoreStreet FIPS-201 Solution is currently available for organizations interested in participating in a beta program for this leading edge functionality, and will become generally available during the month of May for TWIC.
