Gemalto and Oi Partner to Deliver Mobile Content for Pan-American Games Rio 2007

13 million subscribers to access customized entertainment and information on the Games

Rio de Janeiro & Amsterdam, July 16, 2007–Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the leader in digital security, and Brazilian mobile operator Oi, have launched “Promoção Premiada” (Promotion with Prizes), offering entertainment and information services about the Pan-American Games Rio 2007. More than 13 million pre-paid and contract Oi customers in Brazil will have access to premium value-added services such as specific news, alerts on medals won by Brazilian athletes, trivia about previous Pan-American games, chat rooms and downloads of music, games and wall papers. The solution is based on the Gemalto LinqUs platform, and is available to Oi’s current and new customers seamlessly.

With the PAN Rio 2007 service, the user accumulates points and may win prizes in an electronic auction through SMS (Short Message Service). Services cost from R$0.31 (US$ 0.15) for news services to R$10 (US$ 5) for a game download. During the 13 weeks of the Pan-American games, both Gemalto and Oi will award 52 customers with Samsung products like MP3 Players K5, DVD players, cell phones and home theater equipments. Easy-to-access, fast and secure, Gemalto’s solution offers a wide mix of value-added services (VAS), from SMS to full track music downloads.

“We believe that SMS based services like news, quizzes, and alerts on medal ranking will be the services that subscribers will request the most, as these are already well known to the public”, says Fiamma Zarife, Oi’s director for content and applications. “At the same time we will also make available a very large range of content for downloads and handset personalization. Our experience shows that VAS success is based on ease of access and promotion through Oi chip”.

“Ease of purchase is key to the promotion of content” according to Otakar Svacina, Gemalto’s business and partnerships development manager. “With just two clicks Oi subscribers will have access to Rio 2007 Games. Gemalto’s solutions allow operators to dedicate themselves to their strategy while delegating the operations. When we make strategic alliances with partners like Oi, it brings out the best in each company. Gemalto sees the
Pan-American Games Rio 2007 as a major opportunity to introduce its one-stop-shop services to the wireless telecommunications market, and also reinforce its performance in adding and integrating VAS to the SIM: this is a complete solution for entertainment and promotion. Our existing VAS portfolio already includes national and international successes, such as the agenda back up, for both the SIM and the handset data, that is implemented by the country’s major operators”, concludes Svacina.
