Gemalto Wins First 3G-Ready, Over-The-Air Platform Project From China Mobile

Guangdong Mobile takes the lead with the next-generation SIM service platform deployment in China

Amsterdam/Beijing, June 6, 2007–Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), a world leader in digital security, announces today that its Chinese joint venture, SAIT¹, is selected to deploy a new generation of service delivery platform for Guangdong Mobile, the largest subsidiary of China Mobile. This project is the first 3G-ready SIM service platform to be deployed in China and is fully compatible with all 3G-network technologies foreseen, in particular the Chinese-developed TD-SCDMA technology.

China is expected to provide 3G services by 2008 when the Olympic Games are held in Beijing. 3G is the value-added technology enabler for high-speed data and multimedia services. This new platform provided by Gemalto will further improve the subscriber’s experience of value-added services and is able to support the operators as their data services grow.

Based on China Mobile’s latest national standard for SIM technology, this new generation platform provides a highly secure and flexible way to manage SIM-based information portals on Guandgong Mobile SIM cards. This new platform is prepared for broader bandwidth capabilities with 3G and will enable Guangdong Mobile to communicate with its subscribers through high-speed data channels in a more efficient and cost effective way. At the same time, subscribers will benefit from a faster, more responsive and enhanced user experience: Not only will downloading multimedia content be faster, ‘surfing’ menus and services will also be a more engaging experience.

“Technology is constantly changing and improving. We have to keep up with the changing times. Preparing for 3G means considering all aspects of the service beyond the basic network needs,” said Mr. Pan Zhiyong, deputy general manager of marketing & business department, China Mobile Group Guangdong Co. Ltd. “It means considering how subscribers will use the services and how the technology can benefit them in their daily lives. This OTA platform is an important link for Guangdong subscribers and their services.”

Tan Teck Lee, president, Gemalto North Asia adds: “In the 3G era, people will enjoy a much more colorful digital lifestyle with their wireless devices. They can watch any event like the Olympic Games live, handle their personal finances and interact with friends or relatives easily through their mobile phone. This new OTA platform is important because it links the lifestyle services to the subscribers through its ability to recommend and manage subscriber’s preferred content. We believe we are selected in this pioneer project in China because of the technical expertise and platform operation experience demonstrated by our commitment to supporting a strong R&D in China.”
